Richards Medical Research Laboratories was designed by acclaimed Philadelphia architect Louis I. Kahn in 1957-1958. At the time of its completion, it was hailed as a masterpiece of modern architecture and was featured in an exhibit at MoMA in 1961. At the same time, it did not support biomedical research as Kahn or the scientists had envisioned. A phased renovation of the Richards Building which began in 2011 was recently completed. The renovation/preservation effort retains the building’s design significance as well as supports modern dry bench research.
