ABOUT ABOUT

The picturesque, historic campus of Swarthmore College has a long, rich tradition of Modernist design. Just two years after the construction of PSFS’s pioneering modernist icon, proposals for Modern structures on the Swarthmore campus emerged.

The tour will include Modernist buildings designed for the sciences spanning from the 1930s to the present – including a Vincent Kling-designed lab building that now forms part of a lively contemporary Unified Science Center.

The performing arts and entertainment on campus are housed by two key Philadelphia School works: a Mitchell Giurgola-designed concert hall which is at once monumental and intimate, and at once Brutalist and at one with its site; and a Venturi Scott Brown insertion in a Gothic structure that at once celebrates and reinterprets its shell.

The tour will include conversations with John Lawson, architect of both the Lang Center and Tarble Student Center as well as the architect charged with preserving and enhancing this Modern legacy.
